Put A Record On: Thank goodness for Doug Sahm

The Good
"Huggin' Thin Air," Van Plating ft. HalleyAnna Finlay: (can't find a YouTube link for this one, sorry!) Van is continuing her lovely project of Doug Sahm covers with this heartfelt honky-tonker — if you're in the mood for pedal steel and Van's wonderful fiddle playing, you'll love this one. — NW
“That’s Gonna Leave a Mark,” Molly Tuttle: The way people are talking about this new song from Molly Tuttle I expected her to sound like Katy Perry or something? Sure, it’s very different without her band Golden Highway, and it’s not bluegrass. But it’s informed by it, feels like something that would have been on one of my Lilith Fair-esque mix tapes I made in the 90s without being too vintage. I’m excited for this record honestly. - MM
"House Again," Hudson Westbrook ft. Miranda Lambert: This one passes the "doesn't sound like everything else on the new country playlist" litmus test, but it's also just a showcase of how you really don't want to do a duet with Miranda unless you've got the chops. Hudson sounds competent enough, but Miranda is…so good. Sir, you're in danger! (He also covered "The House That Built Me," which I would need hazard pay to listen to — not because of anything about Hudson but because…I have to protect my sanity at some point.) — NW
